I’m late getting on this band wagon. I recently found this tag on youtube HERE and thought I’d love to do one of my own. I hope that I don’t offend anyone with my opinions. If you don’t feel the same way that I do, that’s okay. There are tons of books out there, we don’t all need to like the same ones.
1.) A Popular Book or series that you didn’t like. I actually have several books that I don’t like that everyone seems to love. But these are my top two.
I feel like I should explain this one a little. I really enjoyed the first three books of this series and I fully believe that she should have stopped there. The second half of this series was not her best work and it seemed like she was just trying to please the fans. I felt like City of Glass ended in a great place and I would have been happy stopping there. I have read two and 1/2 of the last three books and I’m not sure that I’m going to finish the last one.
There are so many reasons why I hated this series. I have read 5 of the books, to just give it a shot, but I couldn’t do it. I found myself skipping major sections of the books just to get to end. I thought the writing was terrible and it drew my attention away from the books. I also have a thing about “Mary Sue” characters and this book was full of them. I’m sorry guys, I couldn’t do it.
2.) A Popular Book or series that every one else seems to hate but you love.
I’ll be honest. It took me a long while to actually get around to reading the first book in this series. My bought it shortly after it came out and she didn’t like it, so she gave it to me. She has the same taste in books that I do, so I was sure that I wouldn’t like this book. After a few months, maybe a year? I read it and I really enjoyed it. I went out and bought the other two books. Once you look past all the superficial crap, it’s a great story.
3.) A Love Triangle where the main character ended up with the person you did NOT want them to end up with OR an OTP that you don’t like.
This was a hard one to decide on. I absolutely love this entire series so far and love all of the characters. However I cannot stand Brianna and Roger. I think it has to do with Roger in general. I just didn’t care for the guy and I thought that Claire’s daughter deserved someone better. I don’t know, maybe I’ll fell different when I re-read them again. Probably not.
4.) A popular book Genre that you hardly reach for. I don’t like Horror or Crime novels. I do watch a lot of crime tv, but I just can’t get into the books for some reason. Horror I don’t care for, no matter the format.
5.) A popular or beloved character that you do not like.
I might get a lot of flack for this, but I really had a hard time liking Dimitri. I don’t know what it was about that man, but he angered me more than anything else. I didn’t see what Rose loved so much about him. The longer the series went on the more he annoyed me. Yet someone I really loved the series in spite of him.
6.) A popular author that you can’t seem to get into. I had to think hard about this one. There are several indie authors that I couldn’t get into but not many mainstream ones. If I had to say one for certain it would be John Green. I’ve read a couple of his books, but I just don’t love them. Doesn’t mean that he’s a bad author, he’s just not my cup of tea.
7.) A popular book trope that you’re tired of seeing. (examples “lost princess”, corrupt ruler, love triangles, etc.) Anyone who knows me knows that I cannot stand instalove. I can count on one hand the number of times that it’s worked. In the real world people just don’t instantly fall in love. Sure, I believe in instalust, but not love. You cannot truly love someone until you know them.
8.) A popular series that you have no interest in reading. This one was easy.
I really enjoy Clare’s books, and I’ve read 90% of them. However I’m kinda over the whole Shadowhunter thing. The last three of the Mortal Instruments were so off putting that I don’t think I’ll be reading this new series. There are too many other great books out there to read. Sorry guys.
9.) The saying goes “The book is always better than the movie”, but what movie or T.V. show adaptation do you prefer more than the book? Another easy one.
I’ve tried several times to read these books. I even downloaded the audiobook, but I kept getting bored. The songs in the books were way out of place and to this day I have the Tom Bombadil song in my head. The movies were so well cast and shot. They are one of my favorite movies of all time and I watch them whenever I get the chance.
